I've seen it on DVD online and in the bookstore. Can anyone tell me what that's all about? And if it's already made, then why are we still waiting for it?

The DVD you're speaking of is the BBC television production from the late 1970's. It is strongly based on the BBC radio show, and stars most of the original radio show voice actors. While it was good for it's time, it's still a typical BBC production. The FX are terrible, and it is strongly believed that the actress who played Trillian must have been sleeping with someone to get the part. In this version, she's a squeaky voiced ditzy blonde instead of a brown haired intellectual. Nevertheless, it's definitely worth buying.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I've been trying to get my hands on that, but I haven't managed yet (I'm looking for VHS, don't have a DVD player)

I have the VHS release from years ago, it was all 6 episodes edited together into a movie format, similar to how Doctor Who story arcs are done on PBS over here. At the time, it was the only way I had to obtain a copy, but...
it now sits gathering dust as I just picked up the DVD set. MUCH better! All 6 episodes are on the first disc, as individual episodes, the way it originally aired! And they've been digitally remastered, so the video quality is FAR superior to the old VHS edition.
And disc 2 includes lots of bonus materials, including The Making of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , a behind the scenes special released on VHS years ago.
All-in-all, the DVD is the ONLY way to go! If you don't have a DVD player yet, what the heck are you waiting for? For heaven's sake, people, they're only $150 (US) or LESS now! Join the rest of us in this little thing we like to call the 21st century!

The release of the DVD is September 13th. I believe you can preorder it on Amazon. It will contain commentary from the producers, director and writers and also deleted scenes and some extras that should be interesting.

I picked it up. I was hoping for more extras, but there aren't very many. There's a VERY brief "making of" extra, a couple of cut guide entries, and some cut scenes that were totally pointless. There are however two different commentary tracks. I've only listened to one so far, and it's interesting. Judging by some of the comments made, it sounds as though a great deal of footage was filmed and then left on the cutting room floor.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
