It would be Cool if there was, This Movie Rocked !
Well, there are five books actually, though only the first three have any shot at a transition to the silver screen. I don't think that the books will dictate the films. If this movie does well enough to warrant a sequel, it will surely be Restaurant @ the End of the Universe. They hint quite strongly at that in the final scene. It will probably be about as loyal to the source material as Hitchhiker's was.
Life, the Universe, and Everything would make a good movie too. This story was actually written to be a movie in the first place, though it wasn't supposed to be a Hitchhiker's film. It was originally written to be a theatrical film for Doctor Who starring Tom Baker. The studio felt that the story was too off the wall, and the project fell apart. The TARDIS was supposed to materialize on the Kricket field, not a sofa. The non-British world will have a difficult time with the Kricket referances, but the story as a whole doesn't revolve around an understanding of the game. Everything I know about Kricket I learned from that book, which still isn't very much. A great deal of this book would have to be changed to adapt it to the silver screen, especially considering the relationship between Arthur and Trillian that has been established for the films. Arthur and Trillian have almost nothing to do with each other throughout most of the book.
So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish just won't work as a movie. It's a good book, but it's so different from the first three books that it's just not going to happen.
Mostly Harmless was a trainwreck of a book, and would be just as disasterous as a movie. The relationship between Trillian and Arthur would completely fail to relate to the one that has been established for the movies as well. Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. |
