I read the books and watched the old BBC TV series and I think it helped me understand the story

Well, I read the books, and feel that it helped quite a bit, but then again, it did make me think that the movie wasn't the greatest. Don't get me wrong, the movie rocked, its just that when I held it against the books, there was so much that got left out, or put in that didn't need to be there.

So, read the books, before or after, doesn't matter.

(FYI: the movie is just the first book in the trilogy, not all five like one of my friends thought)

Go ahead and see the movie. You'll enjoy it just fine without having read any of the novels. Seeing it will make you even more eager to read them, but they are not a necessity to understand the film.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
