April 13, 2001 — What is happening to this flick? Well, Rob Zombie has the answer: Rob Zombie's ultaviolent $7 million horror flick-about two couples stranded in a town populated by homicidal maniacs-wrapped last January and was being touted as a summer release for Universal...until the rock star-turned-writer-director showed the studio a rough cut. Zombie's contract required that he deliver an R-rated picture, but the studio felt that an NC-17 would be likely if they were to preserve Zombie's vision. So Universal returned the rights to the filmmaker in early March. "It was just too intense for Universal," says Zombie. "But the movie is 99 percent finished and we're down to one or two distributors. With luck, it'll be in theaters by Halloween." |
