To paraphrase Stephen King, the scariest things are the things unexplained. I loved this film for that reason alone. Too often these days are American viewers given the how's and why's and need it spelled out for them. This is probably why Japanese horror is hitting so big. It's the unknowing that sets our imagination loose and our brains scare us through our own imagination, not what is displayed on the screen.
Folks will likely say things like, 'that was dumb' or 'that was stupid' which probably can be translated as "I don't get it' and "I dont' understand why this or that happened." These folks are likely suffering from having this spoon-fed, Hollywood crutch of explaining it all, hindering their ability to let go of the literal and slip into unbridaled raw sensory.
That being said, I loved this film! It was unapologetically screwed up and insane. This wasn't the latest crap that passes for horror, where you are waiting for the jump scene from some slasher. This was like being caught in somebody's nightmare and not being able to wake up. I kinda left with the same feeling I had when I first saw Hellraiser. Just unimaginable visions and nowhere to run.
Bravo Mr. Zombie.
If you need things to be explained for you, you missed the whole point. Rob Zombie understands that things are scarier when you don't have closure. Open your minds, folks.
yeah man, this movie kick ass. it was very refreshing. it reminded of horror movies from the 50, 60, 70s. before mindless slasher flicks(Scream & I know what you did last summer) and stupid "Ring & Exorcist" Wannabes(Darkness Falls & They).
