August 2, 2001 — Here is some "capsule" review from Newhouse News Service which was
released on July 30, 2001. There were many about movies to come and
some that have been out for awhile.
FILM CLIPS: Capsule reviews of current movies; stars range from
zero to four...
"THE MUMMY RETURNS" A $90 million wind-up toy that actually
works, shooting off loud noises and colorful sparks. Moviemaker
Steven Sommers, Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz et al gleefully loot the
Hollywood tombs they opened in "The Mummy," breathlessly chasing
Pharaoh's risen priest Arnold Vosloo and wry femme fatale Patricia
Velasquez from 1933 Egypt to England and back again amid gaudy
special effects, desert battles, museum shootouts and general
imperialist merriment. Comic-strip violence, spooky shock effects,
old-school racial attitudes. Rated PG-13. Running time: 125 minutes.
