October 30, 2001 — Garth Franklin submitted his review of "Tomb Raider" on Dark Horizons
Overall DVD Score: 7 / 10
"While reaction to the film was mixed, the DVD is certainly a boost. Starting with some very cool blue electric schematic animated menus, the transfer is spectacular - colors are vibrant, edges well rounded, no visible artifacts, extremely good use of surround sound - one of the best transfers Paramount has ever done - something to be said considering they've been one of the last to embrace anamorphic. The commentary by West is not so engaging - he's does a decent job but there's a lot of pauses and he sounds quite tired and/or unenthusiatic.
There's eight major extras altogether, kicking off with five featurettes. Easily the biggest of these is "Digging Into Tomb Raider" which is a standard 25-minute making of program with interviews of the major cast and behind the scenes footage. There's also a seven minute segment on how Jolie trained hardcore every day for three months prior to filming. A ten minute sequence on the major stunts - the bunjee ballet, the Cambodian temple swinging and the arctic climax. A short three-minute bit with Jolie and father Jon Voight talking about their scene together. Finally "Are You Game" is eight minutes about the creation of the "Tomb Raider" games and how Croft has become a cultural icon (incl. interviews with Jolie, the head of Eiddos, and various designers)."
