When the laughs came, they were solid. Duchovny and Jones played off each other like they were old friends. One frenetic scene following the duo’s infiltration into the military-controlled meteor crash site to gather up a specimen is nearly worth the price of admission alone. The sub-plot with Scott’s quest to become a fireman was also entertaining and in the end integral to the film.
The effects shots are also great. The creatures created are very unique and very natural, in an alien sort of way. The mall scene that included a dragon-like alien was particularly well done. I was informed the next day that the version of the movie I saw was not the finished version, so the one special effect shot that I felt wasn’t so special – at the film’s climax -- is likely being retooled.
