 Dumbledore drew an Age Line around the Goblet of Fire to keep away anyone who was not yet seventeen years old.
 When the Weasely twins, who had taken an Aging Potion to try to fool it, crossed over the Age Line, they were thrown back and sprouted long white beards. (GF12)

As long as the Secret-Keeper refused to speak, You-Know-Who could search the village where Lily and James were staying for years and never find them, not even if he had his nose pressed against their sitting room window!" Petrification
"petrificare" L. to make into stone, from "petra" L. rock
Not a spell so much as a magical effect, caused by seeing the reflected eyes of a Basilisk.

Hagrid bred Blast-Ended Screwts from Fire-Crabs and Manticores. (GF24)
Firenze (fy-REN-zee)
A Centaur of the Forbidden Forest, Firenze has made the bold decision to ally himself with humans against the evil that he saw stalking the Forest in the person of Quirrell/Voldemort. This put Firenze at odds with Bane and Ronan, who felt that it was the duty of a Centaur to remain a neutral observer. Firenze, in spite of the feelings of the other Centaurs, rescued Harry from Quirrell/Voldemort in the Forest on May 26, 1992 (SS).

Flesh-Eating Slug
Apparently a frightening creature, since someone was scared enough of them to turn a Boggart into it (PA7).
Hagrid needed a repellent for Flesh-Eating Slugs which were getting into the cabbages (CS4).
Flobberworm
X
A ten-inch, toothless brown worm which eats vegetation, especially lettuce. The mucus it exudes is used to thicken potions. Hagrid, after losing his nerve with the Hippogriff debacle, had his third year students raise these for a semester, which was completely pointless as they prefer to be left alone and to do nothing (PA6, FB).

Ghouls are slimy, buck-toothed, ugly creatures which live in attics or barns of wizards. They are dim-witted and are content to throw things around now and then. Ghouls are relatively harmless creatures who live on spiders and moths. A ghoul lives in the attic of the Burrow, just above Ron's room, which makes noises a lot (CS, GF10)
Chameleon ghouls - known to pretend to be suits of armor (CS10)
Giant
(GF23, GF24)
The race of Giants now lives mostly in remote mountain areas, but there was a time when they were a force to be reckoned with in the Wizarding World. The Giants allied themselves with Voldemort in the 1970s and were responsible for many of the worst incidents of killing and torturing, especially of Muggles. A great many of the Giants were killed by Aurors and the rest fled.
Hagrid's mother was a Giant named Fridwolfa (GF). Olympe Maxime is also part Giant.
Glumbumble
XXX
The Glumbumble is a magical furry insect. It produces a fluid which causes melancholy. This fluid is used as an antidote for the hysteria which results from eating Alihotsy leaves. Glumbumbles eat nettles.
Gnome (garden)
XX
The Gnome is a common garden pest resembling a potato with legs. They live in Gnome-holes underground, where they dig up the roots and generally cause a mess; they're also a dead give-away that a home belongs to a Wizard when there are Gnomes about (Sch1). Every so often, a garden must be "de-Gnomed," which involves grasping the Gnomes by the ankles, swinging them around a few times to disorient them, then tossing them out of the garden. Gnomes are rather dim, so when they realize a de-Gnoming is going on, they all come rushing up out of their holes to see what's going on, making them a lot easier to catch (CS3). Crookshanks loved chasing Gnomes around the Weasely's garden and the Gnomes seemed just as much to love being chased (GF5). (also FB)

Hag
Female magical beings, less human-like than witches (PA4) They are wild in appearance. They have been known to eat children (FB), although at the Leaky Cauldron a hag ate raw liver (PA4). They can be quite frightening, apparently, since Quirrell had a "nasty bit of business" with one during his year off for first-hand experience in fighting the Dark Arts (SS5). Hags are not as adept as wizards at disguising themselves (GF19)

Small, goblin-like creatures, Red Caps love bloodshed; they bludgeon those lost in dungeons or battlefields (PA .
According to A Field Guide To The Little People (Nancy Arrowsmith with George Moorse, New York: Hill and Wang, 1977):
Some of the most bloodthirsty Scottish elves are the Lowland castle spirits. They are called Red Caps...and by some accounts are said to live only in castles with a history of violence. Others say they live in all Lowland peel-towers [fortified houses or towers]. It may well be that both accounts are true...The Red Caps' main occupation is colouring their red caps, which they dye with human blood. They throw boulders on to travellers from their towers, then catch the blood in their caps. As soon as the blood dries and the colour fades, the Red Caps look for new victims. They also foretell disasters by making a loud noise like the beating of flax. The only things that discourage them are crosses, cross-handled swords, and words from the Bible. (p. 47)
These Red Caps are described as short, old elves with a sturdy build and long grey hair. They are about four feet tall and have red eyes.

Ministry of Magic
The Wizarding World
The Ministry of Magic
"We don't send people to Azkaban just for blowing up their aunts!"
-- Cornelius Fudge
Departments, committees, etc.
Rules and Regulations
Personnel
International Wizardry
Other organizations
The Ministry of Magic is the governmental authority of the Wizarding World in Britain. The basic mission of the Ministry is to keep the Muggles from finding out about an entire culture of magical folk. It's a huge, complicated, and inefficient bureaucracy, just like most governmental organizations.
The Ministry consists of seven departments (FB) of which the Department of Magical Law Enforcement is the largest. All of the other departments are in some ways answerable to it, with the possible exception of the Department Of Mysteries (FB).
The Ministry has its headquarters, or at least some of its offices, in London (PA11). It consists of numerous Departments, Committees, Boards, and Offices whose job it is to make and enforce laws and regulations. Besides keeping the activities of Witches and Wizards hidden from the Muggles (and swooping in with Memory Charms when things get out of hand), the Ministry also handles commerce and international relations.
There are a number of law enforcement agencies within the Ministry. They maintain order, enforce laws and regulations, deal with breaches of security, and operate Azkaban, the Wizard's Prison. This high-security fortress is located on a tiny island far out to sea. It is guarded by Dementors. (PA)
The Muggle Prime Minister is aware of the Wizarding World. Presumably this is also true of the President of the United States and of other world leaders. When Sirius Black escaped from Azkaban, Cornelius Fudge informed the Prime Minister the escapee was a dangerous wizard because he posed a threat to Muggles as well as Wizards (PA). In extreme cases where a magical creature has been seen by Muggles and the usual interventions won't suffice, the Office of Misinformation (part of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures) works with the Muggle Prime Minister to concoct a believable lie to give to the public (FB).
Other countries have similar governing bodies; Bulgaria, for example, has it's own Ministry of Magic, the Minister of which, Mr. Oblansk, sat in the Top Box to watch the World Quidditch Final in 1994 (GF . There is also a Ministry of Magic in Norway (QA). All of these governmental organizations have signed the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy of 1692 which set down many requirements for individual countries to keep the Muggles unaware of the Wizarding World. This requires the Ministries of each country to monitor activities such as Quidditch and to protect and hide the various magical beasts which live within their borders (FB, QA).
The Wizards' Council was the predecessor to the Ministry of Magic. Barberus Bragge was the Chief of the Council in 1269. Burdock Muldoon was Chief of the Wizards' Council in the 14th Century (FB, QA). He was followed in office by Elfrinda Clagg, who is generally regarded as being more enlightened than her predecessors (FB). Elfrinda outlawed the hunting of the Golden Snidget, banned its use in Quidditch, and set up a reservation to protect the tiny bird (QA).
Minister of Magic: Cornelius Fudge (c.1990's)
previous Minister of Magic: Grogan Stump (c. 1811) (FB)
Departments, Committees, etc:
Although no organizational chart is available for the Ministry, I have tried to organize this list by Departments. Of course, this is all speculation. The Ministry is a convoluted bureaucracy with plenty of overlap and redundancy, which makes it hard to figure out where each part belongs. We do know that there are seven Departments in all (FB), with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement being the largest, but there is mention of eight departments in the books and no hint of which one might actually NOT be a Department at all, but a subdivision thereof just pretending.
The precise organizational structure below, then, should not be considered canon, but at least it gives this list some logic. I have also listed witches and wizards who are known to work in each department, heads in bold face.
Department of Magical Games and Sports
(Ludo Bagman, Bertha Jorkins) (GF3)
Organized the Quidditch World Cup final and also the Triwizard Tournament
this Department was formed in 1750 (QA6)

are escorted and guarded by groups of Dementors (GF30).
