Read "What's a Christian to do with Harry Potter"
I just finnished reading it, and it gives a fair account of each side's argument! Trust me on this, he was probably missinofrmed. I'm a Christian too! It clears up a lot of misconceptions, and if I hadn't wanted to go near HP before, I would definately be more trusting after reading that book! Check the local library, but I think it costs about $13 to buy! A brand-new IRON WOLF!
"You should know better than to trust a turncoat, especially one as powerful as Silver." --Darmes, Elnadorian Sorcerer
(If you see refrences to Elnador, dragon taming, or other various fictions that you do not recognize, chances are it is part of my books or my game.)

Over here. Been a Christian all my life. Church every Sunday, played guitar for the choir, friends with the parish priest, etc.
My co-worker is the same way. I've been asking her to buy her 6 yr old son book 1 but she always goes, "Harry Potter is evil!" and blah blah blah. She's mellowed out now and even bought him a Potter folder for school but get this -- her son's teacher contacted her and asked that her son's folder be replaced! I can't believe this!!!
To get back on topic, personally, I think the book should be for 7 and above with parents' supervision. If she's around 10-12, she can read it on her own. I mean, I just don't get why people are like this. It's a book. I think I read my first book when I was 5 and it was all about the Greek Myths. Perseus and the Minotaur, Theseus, Pegasus, all that other good stuff. Never did I think that any of those were real.
I think if kids are smart enough to know what right and wrong are, especially with all that's happening all around us right now, having them read a book that millions of other kids have read around the world without incident should be the least of our problems.
Another suggestion would be for you to read them yourself, if you haven't already just so you have a much better opinion on it. Then have your ex read it too. Don't tell me he's afraid of what the book's gonna do to him? Dana: Who do you think was the source on the quote?
Casey: Danny thinks its Luther
Danny: It's Luther
Dana(to Casey): Who do you think it is?
Casey: I think it's Luther too
Dana: You're both idiots.
Casey: Who do you think it is?
Dana: Oh, I think it's Luther. I'm just saying you're both idiots.

Dear ms.MaraJade,
I'm Blue Inferno(let me call myself this way), an Italian boy.I'm 16 and I'm a great fan of Harry Potter's magical world.I think that your husband should take a better position-better for your daughter:books are the mightiest exercise for a mind to create fantasy worlds, and I want you to notice that I said FANTASY ones.Everyone can think everything wants about a book, and it hasn't necessarily to influence your life-it's a matter of how your daughter faces a book.Even if she firmly acquires matters that are in books and believes in them, those matters won't attack those religious pracepts your husband may thaught her.Magic isn't necessarily correlated to Evil and Devil, for Harry FIGHTS Evil, and I think he would eventually fight the Devil itself. Just tell your husband that Harry's world is for kids that don't have strict religious concepts-and if it won't give'em some,it won't even change those that already exist.
And,after all,why don't you try to make him read Harry's books? He may change his ideas...
Let me know how it goes:my mail is mestesso@scientist.com.
Blue Inferno
P.S.
Hey,be happy, don't make me use a Smiley Potion on ya! Oppose me and you're dust. |

Initially, I am disappointed that your husband would ban the reading of a book without more information. . . . but since he seems willing to find out more about the book in question, kudos to him. In my experience those who have "trouble" with Harry have not read Harry Potter, but are reacting to what they read about what is supposedly wrong with Harry Potter.
I am a Christian and do not believe that HP interferes, in any way, with my beliefs. Rather, HP is escapism at its best. A young orphaned boy who is loved by nobody, abused by his relatives, beaten by school bullies, and truly has nothing redeeming about his life suddenly discovers, on his 13th birthday, that he is very special. Not only is he special, but, to an entire "world" of people that coexists with everyday people, he is a hero. The story then follows his exploits. To me, it is reminiscent of Star Wars in that there is clearly defined good and evil, and the "magic" that they excercise is akin to a force (some have it, some are gifted, some have no "powers"). The stories are well-developed and have surprising twists and turns -- wonderful mysteries to try to solve within a completely new world that is, most definitely, magical. I applud Rowlings for her inventiveness -- the books are incredibly clever!! Truly, they are a treat. In fact, Linda, I would recommend them to you for reading! (I have read each of them, and I gave them to my dad -- who is 70 to read -- and he, too, loved them).
I would recommend reading it before condemning it. It is, the books can be, I think, quite scary and I would not suggest them for everyone. From what I have seen of Cool Girl Leia, she is definitely up to the experience
