I remember, a long long time ago, I think f_n posted that he had started reading the first HP book, and he did not understand "what the fuss" was about. A few days later he posted and said "Okay, forget what I said, I like it" -- (I am very liberally paraphrasing his comments -- I cannot recall directly what he said). Anyway, I was wondering about the rest of us -- when did you first become "hooked" on HP? Did it happen immediately; did it take 1/2 of the book or all of the book? Do you recall?

Personally, the very first chapter of the first book had me -- it was soo different and soo unique -- I was intrigued and fascinated; what were these owls? why was this woman a cat? who was this Dursley guy who was embarassed by his relatives? It was all so incredibly different from anything I had read that I simply could not put it down. I have "hung on every word" ever since.

Well...my story is a long and simple one. My sister bought the 1st book in an airport, I thought, my 10 year-old cousin is reading the second one, it's a little kids book. ON the airplane ride home, I tried to read the first chapter, but I couldn't stand it! So, I didn't touch the book for weeks. Then on the 3 hour drive home from the family reunion my sister had the book and I was bored so I said," Give me that stupid book." I forced myself through the first few pages and the rest of the first chapter. Then I started getting into it. By the time we got home, I was on the chapter, " Quidditch." I couldn't put the book down, I finished it that night and I finished the 4 books in a week.

Seeing the trailer hooked me bad. I remember, it was already late that night but I struggled to look for my Sorcerer's Stone book which I knew was somewhere in the house. I also ended up reading 1-4 in a week.

I remeber about a year ago when book 4 came out i was wondering what the big fuss was.i kept saying i would buy the books later one. well i kept putting its off until i happened to talk to a guy who works for Scholastic. he said you haven't read them yet i said no so he said hmmmmmm...you really should, So he left and came back about 1 hour later with the first 2 books. I was so grateful he gave them to me. Anyway i got home my dad wanted to read them so he read them first he said they were different but good, so then i picked it up and i got hooked on the first chapter. i read both books in 2 days then bought the other 2 the following week and finished those. so far i read about 3 times all the way through since February.

if i'm gonna be late i might as well be real late

When I heard book 4 was being sold beginning midnite, I was silently scoffing it going, "Hmp. Star-Wars promo copycat". That was before I read the books.
You know I'm gonna be lining up next year when Book 5 comes out.

I read the HP books before they were famous. In about yr5, I was a real bookworm so I grabbed the first book out, read it and then persuaded my librarian to buy the others as soon as they came out!

It caught my attention when book 4 was released, I heard of all those people queuing up to get it, then I was like: "What's this Harry Potter thing everyone's talking about? What am I missing? Children's book? How can it be interesting?" Didn't get it yet, but then I started to see it a bit too much everywhere, book shops, the net, TV, then I ordered it. I was still very wary when I started to read it, I'm not a fan of fantasy or bad written stuff, but then I read it and had to agree with everyone.

Well, my gifted 8th grade teacher assigned the first one as outside reading. There was only one quiz at the end of the month to be sure you read it. I was in love with it from page 1. TO me, it was great literature that was written in a modern language. It wasn't like "The Old DUmbledore set forth on the cobbled stone pave to find other than thy self." It was actually entertaining to read this. SO I bought book two, then book 3, and I had book 4 pre-ordered at BN.com, and it was delivered the day it came out. It took me 1 day to read.

Well, actually, I heard about it on a computer show. lol The host was doing a segment about computers in the classroom and then somehow he started talking about how his daughter was going nuts over Harry Potter. I'd see the books on the shelves and say "i'm gonna read one of those one day" but never did.

(fast forward to Book 4 opening)

Ok, now I'm like "this is insane..I've gotta check out what they're going crazy over" so after the crowds died a little, I got my hands on book one and at about page 4 I knew I was in for a treat. It was just one of those things where you can tell you're gonna love it. I'm not a real fast reader, so I read all 4 in about 3 weeks. lol

I became so hooked I started trying to get others to share my habit! I gave a "book on tape" of book 1 to my dad for Christmas -- he called me and said it was one of the best "books on tape" he had listened to (he drives a lot and listens to them in the car while driving); and wanted to know if the author had written any others. He was hooked from the beginning as well

Hi there! I started hearing about the Harry Potter Books just as book 3 was being published in America. I read an article in Time and saw little blurbs on the news and it piqued my interest. I bought book one and two and was immeaditly hooked. I used to take off the dust jackets and cover the book in brown paper to take it to work. I was teased a lot! (I'm 27) But now I don't care. I felt like a Mormon converting people. I was hooked from the first chapter title "the boy who lived" how cool is that! I also bought the books on tape for my dad for Christmas (books 1 & 2) He can't read small print for long periods of time so he listens to them in the car too. (He's 62) I was a little worried about the tapes at first. I hoped that they wouldn't be abridged or odd sounding, but Jim Dale narrates them brilliantly! My dad loves them as much as I do. We got him books 3 & 4 for his birthday. I think I prefer listening to them, over reading the book. It makes me feel like a little kid being read to, 'cept I'm driving! My dad and I talk about it all the time and drive my mother crazy. I tried to convince her to read them, but alas, shes a cantankerous old woman. Ok, I've gone on too long again...ta.

Ummm...lets see. It was in 7th grade and a girl named Jessee was reading the third book and the teacher goes up to her and says " Jessee, so do you like the Harry Potter books? I have heard they are really good. " Soon afterwards everyone started reading them and I had to go try one, cause usually, if everyone likes them, I will like them too. So I went out that night and bought the first book. I read it and read it until I was finished with it. It was great. Soon later I read the 2nd and the third and waited a long time for the 4th book to come out. After the third book I was hooked. I had to read more. So here I am now on Harry Potter message boards, collecting the merchandise, and having so much fun reading the books over and over again. I can't wait til the 5th book comes out and until the movie finally comes out on November the 16th. Yippee!

I had lost some interest in pleasure reading since my semester at college finally ended...I was just happy to be done. Then, awhile later my mom bought the first three books and I didn't think much about it. I knew it was a serious addiction when she called me one day and demanded that I go to a book store on my trip out and get her the 4th book. I said, "The forth HP book...huh? It says YEAR 4 on it....okayyyy....finnneee
e *whine*." LOL Now I look back and realize how out of the HP loop I was. So my mom got me into it and I was hooked a little way into the 1st one. I have spread it to about 15 people as of this writing...I never have my books because they are always out spreading THE WORD!

I was in my brother's room playing the sims, and he was listening to the very last tape of Prisoner of Azkaban. I listened with him, and though i didn't really know what was going on, I knew I loved it. When it was over I asked him to start on the first book, and within the week we had listened to all four of them. I would have read them, but as I was in the middle of a college semester and I'm a history major I had tons to read, the tapes were the only way to read them. That woulda been this past spring, and since then i've listened to all the books about 7 times, I would read them but I am still in school right now, trying to finish this next May. Once I finish I am actually going to sit and read them, though I must say I always thought listening to books on tape was BS, but when it's unabridged, as these are, it's actually great 'cause it's the only way i could read anything for pleasure. Sometimes I really hate being a history major . . .

It was two years ago in the beginning of September. And I heard a few of my friends talking about how the new Harry Potter book was coming out that day. I kept on asking who he was and why everyone was fussing about him. Then I started to use explictives: "Who the F*** is Harry Potter!?!?!?!!". Then I found out, and I read the books.

I try but you see, it's Hard to Explain

Hmmm...My story is actually pretty interesting. I read the first one RIGHT when it came out, when NOBODY had heard of Harry Potter, and in fact, neither had I. I was sitting in my dance studio, waiting for my class to start, and was bored. There was a book on the bench next to me and I picked it up. Didn't look at the cover, didn't read the back. So I started reading with literally no clue. I actually thought Dudley was going to be the hero! I didn't learn the title till I had read about three chapters, because a kid came out of his dance class and demanded his book back, but I wanted to finish it, so I had to know the title to buy it. I, too, was hooked at page 1.

I believe that I was hooked the moment I read the part about the cat reading the map.
I just went, WHAT *\eyes bulging/* .. Then the rest is history, as some would say, and many sleepless nights followed reading book after book until I finished.

But, my friends I was not through, I needed more, so I turned to the net and found more information than I had ever thought humanly possible to know and understand. But, I was wrong.

So I burned myself out with it and faded into my own mind to read nothing and to sleep

Tonight, history is going to be made. And it isn't the discovery-of-radium, first-man-on-the-moon-hap
py kind of history.
It's the Spanish-Inquisition, here-comes-the-Hindenburg bad kind of history.

I read the first book before all the fuss too. My friend was reading it and said it was good and lent it to me. I thought it sounded stupid but I love to read so I read it and I loved it! Then that same friend's mom bought me the second and third at a school book fair (this is when the mania was starting to spread). Then another one of my friends sold me their copy of the fourth because they didn't want to read it (???) and I was hooked on that book as soon as I read the title of the first chapter. I will always be a Pottermaniac.... Potter 4 President!
(But I wasn't OBSESSED until this last year when I became friends with this girl named Elyse who was this total Harry Potter freak. She really led me to all this Ron business)

I love to laugh, hahahaha!
Loud and long and clear.
I love to laugh, hahahaha!
So everybody can hear!
The more I laugh, hahahaha!
The more I fill with glee.
The more I laugh, hahahaha!
The more I'm a merrier me!
