now that i'm at home and have access to my books... i got to thinking.

i don't think this was brought up on the old boards.

anyways when harry lived with the dursley's he'd stay with mrs. figg.

at the end of book 4, dumbledore asks that sirius round up the old gang, with arabella figg included.

i know someone theorized that perhaps mrs figg and arabella figg are one and the same.

so i got to thinking... perhaps if this is true, is mrs figg the secret keeper for harry? after all, as long as he's at the dursley's, voldy can't find him...

or am i off my rocker?

Well, i think JK keeps up on the latest rumors. Since this is such a popular rumor, she probably won't use it, or won't use it like we are saying it. Like she might make Mrs. Figg that Witch, but something about her will be totally and completely unexpected. I think she could possibly be Harry's grandmother.

I think you are on to something . . . . We know, I think, because of something Dumbledore did, Harry is "safe" with the Dursleys; when they leave, he winds up going to Mrs. Figg -- must be some reason -- and, he would need to be "safe" there too -- so maybe there is something to that. It would be hysterical to find out she is not a muggle . . . . and was "part of the old crew."

I think myslef that Mrs. Figg is a Witch who watches over harry. Remember Dumbledore said it was safer for Harry to go back to the Dursley's at the end of Book 4. I thinkMrs. Figg watches over harry. Plus i also think she might be an unregistered animagi. Here are some quick ideas:


-Mrs. broke her leg when Dudley ran over her. Crookshanks has bowled legs. Plus Crookshanks new about scabbers and could talk to Sirius.

-The guy in book 4 who gave Mr. weasley the tent "smelled and oddly looked like it was decorated by Mrs. Figg"

_the end of book 4 Dumbledore says go get Arabella Figg.

-She was the only one ever nice to Harry.

Idont know...anymore i might of missed?

Ohhh - I am getting soo interested in this -- I need to read the books again to try to see how this is developing.

By the way, that is one of my absolute FAVORITE things about Rowlings -- she starts something and continues to develop it over time, and sometimes it doesn't really turn into anything until much much later -- but the clues to it were there all along.

When i told my other friend who read the books she doesnt think Figg is an Animagi because she thinks Dumbledore would make her get registered but i said look at Rita Skeeter seh is unregistered. so maybe she is.

Did anyone ever catch on to the Mirror of Erised. It took me 2 times to read that book to notice what the mirror had written on it....

Is Mrs. Figg supposed to be so active, she's old isn't she?
JK always gives some hints here and there, some of them misleading, some not...
Maybe [SPOILER] Crookshanks is an animagus, but someone else related to Mrs Figg that we don't know? He obviously knows Sirius well, they seemed kind of close in book 3, when harry looked through the window and saw the 2 of them "talking". [/SPOILER]
You know, I find it cool that we have no idea of what's going to happen, I want to be surprised, shocked.

If Figg is a witch don't you think that Harry would have noticed that all the pictures of her many cats that she bored him to tears with were moving around in their photos? (how's that for a doosey of a run-on) I'm not saying that she definatly isn't a witch, though. Maybe she used a muggle camera, or perhaps you need to take the film for magical processing or they come out still.

I kind of buy Crookshanks as an animagus even if she is not Mrs. Figg; Crookshanks is portrayed as very smart; she is close to Sirius; seen talking with Sirius; she knew what Wormtail was; in fact, if you think of her as an amigamus, it explains all of her behavior.

It may be that Mrs. Figg is a witch living as a Muggle in order to be a protector to Harry; she has been in disguise for so many years so that the Dursleys and others won't be "on" to her -- can you imagine the Dursleys agreeing to Harry staying with her if they thought she was a witch? The one thing that puzzles me -- why Harry dislikes her so -- well, I know, it is because of the smell and the cats, etc. etc. -- but if she is Harry's additional protector, couldn't she have been more hospitable to him -- wouldn't he have warmed up to her? (Kind of like he and Sirius.)

Well maybe Dumbledore told Mrs. Figg not to Magical things around so harry wouldnt get scared. I mean like Hermione said, don;t worry harry there are some kids who know less than you do before they come to Hogwarts (paraphrasing). Maybe Dumble dore wanted to kep harry safe. I mean witches live among muggles.

I have no trouble buying that Mrs. Figg was not supposed to do magic around Harry, or anyone, to preserve her pretend muggle anonymity. I was just thinking that Harry always seemed to dislike her -- and I thought, perhaps, if she is his protector she might be more likeable. Perhaps, though, she intentionally is the way she is towards him so the Dursleys will understand/believe that Harry dislikes going to stay with her -- that way they will keep sending him there. After all, if it was something Harry liked, they would probably say "no way." ??

I think Harry only disliked Ms. Figg because he was a young boy who was sent to her when the rest of his "family" (and i use the term family loosley) were out doing interesting things, or out eating, etc. What young boys like hanging out with old dotty women who are obsessed with their cats? It was never mentioned that she was mean to him. And as far as Figg being Crookshanks, Crookshanks is always referred to as "he". Unless Figg can transfigure AND transgender herself. *teehee*

I am a bit slow, I just finished the 4th book two days ago! I like this theory. I always thought that Crookshanks was more than it appeared! As far as Mrs Figg, I dunno....It all adds up.

I just am frustrated in attempting to quess out comes in these books! I feel like an idiot. These are kids books and I can't see it coming! I think I have it all figured out, the BAMMM she throws in a twist. Like with [SPOILER] Cederic, I thought it was odd that he knew how to figure out the egg! Who would have quessed that Mad-Eye Moody used the Poly juice poition! Then When the trophey turned out to be a portkey!!!! [/SPOILER] Makes for great books. I can't wait for the 5th, 6th, and 7th!!!!!

hmm. who knows about the crookshanks part. they don't really say anything else about mrs. figg past book 1.

fred and george just took their O.W.L.s at the end of book 3, the fifth year tests. so in book 4 they're sixth years and book 5 would be seventh years. this should be fun, watching fred and george take their N.E.W.T'S

Oh my I was way off! I couldn't remember. It's been months since I read them. Oh well, I guess its time to start all over again! I can't wait to see the boys dorm in Gryffindor Tower, with the poster beds and the curtains around the beds and junk. I always thought it sounded cool. Wow -- this hypothesis is fantastic!! The thing with these books is that JK seems not to have put a single character in without a reason down the line.

The mere fact that Harry has to go stay with someone who is a big fan of cats should have been enough to give it away right there, but of course in Book 1/2 you're not looking for such little hints/twists. Things like two characters called the same thing in a Harry book is definitely NOT chance -- you can be sure she was one of the old gang. D'oh!

Someone with too much time on their hands over the holidays should list all the people mentioned in Books 1-4 and detail how they have been involved in the story, and see who is missing, I think it may prove interesting. If you wanted to get really analytical, you could list the number of times each seemingly unrelated person (and animal!) had been mentioned, and cross reference it. I just know there are at least another few characters that have already appeared (like Hermione's cat) that are going to be exposed in the next books!

The interesting thing about Book 4 is how a bunch of people (like Malfoy family) are exposed publicly. It will be interesting how that turns out!

Yeah, WICKED eh? (I'm going to be saying that a lot ) I tell you. I didn't think anyone could beat Agatha Christie and she did. I'm a fan of mistery but never saw anyone surprising more than JK. These are not common children's books.

No kidding, and it was all right there and I didn't put it together!!! *smacks forehead* when Harry was out with the Maurader's Map and his invisibility cloak [SPOILER] and he saw Barty Crouch in Snape's office, and who comes around the corner? MOODY! I felt like a dope when Dumbledore got it all out of Barty Jr in the end. [/SPOILER] Man she's good. But how did Dumbledore not realize who [SPOILER] Moody [/SPOILER] was? Do you really think polyjuice potion can fool a wizard as wise as him? This brings me to the question [SPOILER] Is Dumbledore really a bad guy? When Harry tells him that Voldemort has Lily's protection from taking his blood Harry notices a look of triumph in Dumbldore's eyes that quickly dissapears. Is this part of some yet unknown plan Dumbledore has to destroy Voldemort? Or is he secretly pals with He Who Must Not Be Named?? HHMMmmmmm. [/SPOILER] dum dum DUM!

I came here in search of your Dumbledore theory. I actually, eons and eons ago, posted something very similar to what you said above. I thought that the "triumph" in Dumbledore's eye was a pretty big clue to something. I like Dumbledore so much, that I was assuming/hoping/thinking that Voldemort taking part of Harry's blood was hooking into a plan of his to destroy Voldemort. I think, if Dumbledore is a "bad guy" Voldemort could have easily, with Dumbledore's assistance, taken over the entire wizarding world during the last rise of Voldy -- I was thinking that he must be good -- but like I said, I like him so much, I want him to be a good guy.

Oh, and this theory may deserve a thread of its own -- I'll leave that to your judgment -- you can start it if you like. For some reason (the MB is odd at times), I posted on aRJedi's and that thread disappeared, so I'd thought I would add on here until the other thread again became accessible.
