down with the visual effects supervisor for Spider-man John Dykstra
to talk about all the work that went into the movie.
John Dykstra's illustrious career in film hit another highpoint with the
release of "Spider-Man" and its overwhelming box-office success. Though it
was one of the first films in which a CG character was used extensively as
a substitute for a human actor, "Spider-Man" thrilled audiences more
with its heart than with its flashy visuals -- which is the idea, according
to veteran VFX-man Dykstra.
Dykstra, a champion of visual effects working in
service of story, had an unusual title on "Spider-Man" -- a title
that may pop up more often as the nature of visual effects continues to change.
Credited as the visual effects
designer, Dykstra oversaw the aesthetic statement of the visual effects in
the film, rather than supervising the day-to-day engineering that a visual
effects supervisor handles...
