November 16, 2002 — The Seattle Times talked to John Heinecke, the global brand-management director for Activision, about how closely the game developer worked with the Spider-Man production to bring the game to life:
Activision worked closely with Sony Pictures during the design and
production of the movie. Sony showed the game's design to the director, Sam
Raimi, who approved its storyline. The studio gave Activision early looks at
costume and set designs so the game could capture the same look and air of
authenticity. The game hit stores two weeks before the film opened -- a trick of timing that helps games sell three or four times better than those debuting later, Heinecke says.
Developing a good game is important, he adds, because the mere association with a movie won't guarantee success.
