December 14, 2001 — Producer Jerry Weintraub hopes that the Academy will consider Carl Reiner:

Still, Eleven producer Jerry Weintraub is holding out hope for Carl Reiner. "The son of a gun!" Reiner shouted at me. "When Jerry saw the picture, he told me I said, 'Jerry, I know you; you're a hypester.' " But Weintraub put his money where his mouth is and ran a For Your Consideration ad for Reiner in the trades. "Well, I have never had one of those in my life," Reiner laughed. "I've won Emmys, but I'm not an Oscar person." Costar Brad Pitt is in Carl's camp, too. "He gives a really touching performance in this," Pitt told me. "This guy's had an extraordinary career, and he's the birth of comedy as far as I'm concerned. Maybe there's hope for him." Then he added with a grin, "But not for us."
