December 7, 2001 — ModaMag's Brian Orndorf gives Ocean's Eleven a nine out of ten. Here's a clip:
From the opening shots, the differences between the two versions of "Oceans Eleven" are readily apparent. Long gone is the Rat Pack silliness and in-jokey vibe. Soderberghs "Eleven" plays more as a solid heist picture. Its interested more in how the characters get away with it than how much they enjoy getting away with it. Its rather futile to compare the two versions, as one has become a time capsule of an era dedicated to old-school Vegas, decadence, and filmmaking that is long since gone. And the other being a rousing, star-laden attempt to wrestle away some of your holiday moviegoing bucks. Neither film is rocket science, but the 2001 remake seems to crackle more with expert timing and a Las Vegas that is a little more complicated than it was 40 years ago.
