Dinos Look Getting Closer to Real Thing?

SUBMITTED BY Fred Hill

August 5, 2001

Here is an article that looks at the connection with science and Hollywood. The main topic would be the dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park movies. Below is the part where the most recent movie is mentioned however the whole article is about Jurassic Park and the creatures that Stan Winston has made. Thanks Squrik for the info.

"We like to adhere to whatever the latest information is, the archaeology, but for the most part we're creating characters for films,'' White said. "The primary thing is to make an interesting and realistic creature that is fun and entertaining for a movie while being as accurate as we can make it.''

For example, White said the male raptors in Jurassic Park III have quill feathers sticking out of their heads, a bow to research on the link between dinosaurs and birds.

Even scientists are not immune from popular culture, Witmer said.

As a graduate student, he recalls being taught that dinosaurs were "dull-witted swamp dwellers.

"Today, because of Jurassic Park, my graduate students grow up thinking that dinosaurs are quick-witted and can even turn door knobs,'' Witmer said. " Scientists are not divorced from the populace. We are consumers of the mass marketing of dinosaurs just like everybody else.''
