January 28, 2002 — Robert Redford will be on the receiving end for an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards this March. Organizers said yesterday that the award is in recognition of his work as an actor, director and founder of the Sundance Institute for aspiring filmmakers.
The citation on Redford's honorary Oscar will read: "Robert Redford - Actor, director, producer, creator of Sundance, inspiration to independent and innovative filmmakers everywhere."
Redford previously earned an Oscar nomination for his work in "The Sting." His 1980 directorial debut, the drama Ordinary People, earned him an Academy Award. In 1994 he was nominated once again as best director for "Quiz Show."
The 74th annual Academy Awards will be presented in Los Angeles on March 24.
