October 14, 2001 — Robert Redford talks his character in 'The Last Castle'. Some clips from the article (Reuters):
In ``Last Castle'' he plays General Irwin, a West Point graduate and war hero whose love of country and sense of duty remain true despite having being court-martialed.
``I found it very intriguing to play that kind of character, which is fairly remote from my life experience, being someone who has been at various times been critical of our political system, either off-screen or on-screen,'' Redford told Reuters.
``Prior to Sept. 11, there was a high degree of cynicism, especially in film criticism. There was a tendency to pooh-pooh anything that worked for the American flag or patriotism.''
``There's a lot of mixed emotions. One thing, hopefully, this film might do is just square away on a point of view of what it's like to be a military person,'' he said.
``When Irwin teaches a kid to salute, that's a big deal. That's part of the symbolism of being a soldier ... it's not just putting your hand to your head, it's about pride, about pride in yourself, your country and your flag.''
