October 13, 2001 — Hey everyone, MrSnuggles here.
Just got through listening to Jerry Goldsmith's score for The Last Castle, from Decca Records.
I have to say, after watching the movie, I feel like I missed a lot of this wonderful music, I suppose my attention was focused elsewhere, but I'll be sure to pay more attention to it on October 19th.
This is some of Goldsmith's best work in my opinion. It's simply amazing. It harkens back to the propaganda war movies of the 40s and 50s that we all remember. At times it is loud, bold, and striking, at other times it's quiet, and emotionally moving.
I though you'd like to review the title names of each track:
1. The Castle
2. Irwin Arrives
3. The Rock Pile
4. Get Behind the Mule (Performed By John Hammond)
5. Let's Go, Ladies
6. Full Alert
7. Military Justice
8. The Count Down
9. Hold Them
10. Taking Command
11. The Flag
12. September 11, 2001 - Theme From The Last Castle
13. Chiseled in Stone (Performed By Dean Hall)
It's great to see extra-turned-actor Dean Hall get his song "Chiseled in Stone" onto the soundtrack, hopefully this will help a talented man get more exposure.
In the liner notes of the soundtrack, Rod Lurie rights a moving letter to the consumer about his respect and admiration for composer Jerry Goldsmith. It's definitely worth a read.
I'll leave you with a line from Rod himself about the theme song from The Last Castle:
The Theme from The Last Castle contains "twenty-four notes that are a gift to soldiers; to sailors; to Americans."
Well said.
