It has been a long time since I've seen Doom though I did review it back in October (cannot believe that much time has passed!). Those that read the review will note I did like the movie, I found it to be a decent adaptation of the game. Oh sure, it could've been done better - however, I think we all kind of say that. No movie pleases everyone and for me if I am interested and not checking my watch or seat squirming, that is the equivalent of an NKK Oscar. I got a kick out of the movie, loved the campy horror references, and loved the audience clapping when first person shooter appeared on the screen. If you'd like to refresh yourself with my complete review feel free!
That being said I am going to keep this short and sweet (sides, you know I'd just copy and paste my original review in here). The unrated extended edition DVD has pretty much what you would expect it to have - more gore, longer fight sequences, entire first person shooter segment, and I'm sure there are some extra bits in there that I don't recall, but again - it's been awhile since I've seen the movie and the old brain isn't what it used to be! I had the same reactions I did when I watched the theatrical version, so there were no shocking deleted scenes that were dumped back in (that I could tell).

Now, the bonus features - honestly, I must be getting spoiled since I have a bit of a disappointment flash every time I see just one disk in a DVD box (especially if I liked the movie). You know, where is the four disks of extras I came to know and love when Lord of the Rings was popping out on DVD? I mean even Spider-Man has a double disk. Aside from the fact that everything is crammed onto one disk, it will not disappoint and actually the special features make a nice round up for the movie.
Basic Training - gives you an in depth look into the military and weapon training the cast and crew went through for the filming of the movie. Rock Formation - gives a detailed featurette on the make up and prosthetics applied to Dwayne during the battle at the end of the film. Master Monster Makers - a terrific featurette (yeah, I'm a geek and proud of it) containing interviews with the special effects team and an in depth look into the creation and evolution of the creatures in the film. Doom Nation - delves into the history of the game and the impact it has had on the gaming industry. Game On - is a featurette that offers tips and strategies to Doom game players.
And of course the First Person Shooter featurette giving you a longer never before seen version of this groundbreaking sequence and then delves into just how it was created with all the trials and challenges.
There is also a feature to Play the Doom 3 Game Demo - however, it is for X-Box and I unfortunately do not have one of those nifty things. I have no idea how it is or how long the demo is. All it stated was to pop the DVD into your XBox and enjoy a demo (sniffle).

So aside from being disgruntled over the lack of PC demo for Doom 3- I was pretty content with the rest of the bonus features on the DVD. Of course I'll recommend this for any Doom fan out there, that is a given! And as I said in my movie review - don't be too hard on it, after all it is what it is - a good movie based on a game. You'll laugh, cringe, probably jump a few times and there are far worse ways to spend movie night than curling up with some popcorn and the Unrated Extended Doom DVD. |
