Even though I hadn't seen the movie in the theatre, I know several people that did. According to them, this was the most hilarious movie they had seen in a long time and they were sure I'd love it. Why would I love it? Well, I'm just as sassy as the next gal and some good old fashioned raunchy humor always is worth a giggle. In retrospect, I wonder if I would've liked this movie more a few years back ( I think I'm mellowing with age perhaps) since honestly, I didn't think it merited the hype my friends gave it - and I was watching the unrated version, that alone should've cinched it for me. Oh, I liked it enough, and I certainly did laugh out loud a few times however, I will say I'm glad I didn't give into peer pressure and go see it in the theatre.
The story is pretty self explanatory - a forty year old virgin named Andy (Steve Carell) gets pressured by co workers and friends into the quest to get himself a gal and well... you know (c'mon I know you know what I mean!). And if you think that is all you are mistaken - it also is a morality tale in disguise.
Steve Carell does a hilarious job as Andy and any man that is willing to forgo the fur in the name of reality filming gets my admiration (though now I do have a skewed look at my favorite character Hammy in the coming 'Over the Hedge'). The supporting cast is exceptional and they all did a fantastic job considering they were allowed a great freedom in making up things as they filmed along. It all flowed well enough, the entire cast was perfect together and yet, there was just something missing or a little off that kept this from being all that it could be (either that or my brain has issues when morals are snuck in to what you hoped was a light hearted laugh fest).
The DVD is loaded with a lot of goodies and that is always a plus. There is a slew of deleted scenes with an optional commentary, a hilarious gag reel, Line-o-Rama which is different versions of pick up lines used in the movie, The Waxing Documentary (Geez, I'm a girl and I still felt the pain), Date-a-Palooza extended, and even more yet! the bonus features certainly do not disappoint!
So, you have a funny movie (even if I don't think it merits the funniest of the year, it still is funny in its own way) and some serious extras that are hilarious to watch - what more could you want? It doesn't make the ever so picky NKK DVD library, but I am quite sure it will be on a lot of peoples lists, in stockings, under the tree and what not as I know full well I am in the minority of thinking this movie was just 'alright'. I will say it's worth checking out all the extras - especially if you loved the film in the theatre.
