So you all know that I loved this movie, which means there is no real reason to review the movie itself. So we are just going to focus on the special features.
The first special feature you come to is the Introduction to Team America. I don't know what was better seeing how they put this movie together, or listening to Trey Parker rip on Hollywood. I think personally it might have been the later. The other features breakdown the look of the film, the characters, what it was like to actually work with the puppets and of course the special effects. If you have seen the movie you know that the special effects rival those of any Bruckheimer film. I am, of course, only kidding, but it is funny to see a puppet blow up. In building the world you see how they made the sets but even better they reveal secrets behind some of the props you see. For instance in the movie a woman is walking with a basket on top of her head, it looks to be filled with food. It is later revealed that not only is it filled with food it is filled with those awesome little goldfish crackers. Apparently the puppets carry around their own craft service, which in turn cuts down on production costs and keeps the puppets happy. Let's face it no one wants to work with an angry, unruly puppet, I have heard about their reputations and it is enough to put JLo to shame.
Maybe my favorite feature was "Up close with Kim Jong-Il". He was of course my favorite character in the movie, come on we all wanted to pinch those cheeks. Matt and Trey actually took their time to research this man and his character. They even state that most of the third act was inspired by events they had read about Kim Jong Il when Madeline Albrecht visited him some years back.
The pyrotechnics in the film should garner a "Stiffy" Award, this is an award given to the most awesome death and destruction scenes in an action movie. Nah, I am just kidding, but it was still fun to watch them blow up the sets that they had taken so much time and energy to build.
What you will find the most fascinating, and one of the highlights to me, were all the people who came out of the woodwork to do this film. Each time they would mention someone Matt and Trey would laugh thinking there is no way these people will do this film. What they didn't know is that everyone enjoys a little South Park, and when they heard about the idea they jumped at the chance to do it. If you think of your favorite action movie, I can almost guarantee someone who worked on it worked on Team America, and it is a better movie because of it. When you see all the behind the scenes you really understand what it took to make this film, which makes me love it even more.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the scene everyone has heard about, that is correct - the extended Love scene. I thought I had seen it all the first time, but this my friend put even Cinemax to shame.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. |
